"The Beach" will be on display at the Toronto Pearson International Airport from April 8, to December 1, 2011. It is on exhibit in the Airspace Gallery, Terminal 1. It is 4 feet x 3 feet, and depicts elements from beaches all over.

I was also told they're expecting people from the Toronto International Film Festival. So much for laying low. I put two of my most beloved paintings in, my new ones just aren't ready yet.

An Old Picture Resurfaces

Nine years ago I sold a drawing of handtrees to a friend whom I knew from high school for 30 bux. She contacted me again recently and sent me these two pictures of the picture framed under glass in her new home. Isn't that nice! What a well preserved antique "Lisa Ng." I remembering being really surprised anyone bothered to get it framed at the time. A good lot of them are probably warped and slightly faded by now :( She's been waiting for me to get famous for a long time. She says it still makes her happy and still gets many compliments for it:

I had another picture I wanted to post on here sent to me by a happy couple. It was of Picasso's Blue Period resting in their home. I lost it though :(

I find these pictures in my email box sometimes. They make me happy because I know they make other people happy. I look at them from time to time when I'm feeling down, or lonely.

Feel free to share any new things you've learned recently. Here are 10 new things I learned this summer:

10 new things

1. Be weary of scam artists. If people are over eager and it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. See “Charles Phey”: http://pittsburghgalleries.blogspot.com/2011/07/fraud-alert-emails-from-charles-phey.html

2. How to pick out good salmon and fry it, grandma style. To see if the salmon is fresh, give it a good poke with your finger. If the flesh bounces back immediately, it’s fresh. If the flesh only lingers and remains indented, it’s old. The tail end of the fish is the best part. Avoid the scrap fish head bucket at all cost! Take a butcher knife and slice the fish tail into 5 cm thick chunks. Add salt and cornstarch. Fry it one side at a time; don’t put the lid on until both sides are fried. It’s done when the flesh is firm enough for you to poke a hole through it with a chopstick.

3. Helpful tips for coloring. A couple of weeks ago I started a painting and used up a good tub of various colors of paint trying to decide on the right colors. The canvas went from white, to hunter green, to yellow-green, to muted blue, to grape purple, to plum purple, and finally, to fuchsia purple. Keep in mind that every time I changed the color of one section of the painting, I am compelled to change the colors of all the other sections of the painting. After realizing how much paint I used, I tried to reflect and propose a formula that might make coloring a little easier. Keep in mind, there’s really no correct way to color, in fact there’s probably a billion and one ways to color that I still haven’t quite figured out yet, but for the time being, here’s what I came up with. (Although wasting paint is not an issue for an astronaut, I generally use the same coloring method as an Astronaut Colorist):

1. Color the things in your picture to which you are 100% sure of what color you want them to be first.
2. Color in the largest areas of the picture that are remaining.
3. Color in the smaller areas of the picture that are remaining, keeping in mind that all the colors look good together.
4. Always leave room for change.

4. More is affected from my day-to-day actions and decisions than I will ever realize.

5. “You can’t do good work until you grow old” –Tsuguharu Foujita. Lots of artists emphasize the importance of good health and living well. Tsuguharu Foujita, upon being invited to do an artist talk at an art school in Tokyo, went so far as to speak nothing of art, but only talked about the importance of eating well, and staying physically fit.

6. “He who teaches children learns more than they do.” German Proverb

7. In 17th century Holland, people use to carry on them these highly intricate, tiny sculpted skulls and skeletons on themselves as jewelry. It was a reminder that they could be dead by the night’s end. You can now see them for free at the AGO on Wednesdays, 6-8:30 pm.

8. Too many people are afraid of unjustifiable laws.

9. My art teacher use to say, “Art rooms are for making art, art rooms are safe.” This is something he’d say to us every September at the beginning of the school term, right around the time when he was explaining how not to run around with scissors. I use to wonder why this little bit of information was so important, why it needed to be repeated year after year, why safety was so important to an art room. Then I thought, only when you feel safe, can you truly be free. Art is one of the very few places where I can be free.

10. Overcoming shyness has been, is, and will be my greatest obstacle.

Well my art show is all good and done. Thanks for coming out for all those who did. It was nice seeing some familiar faces, and new ones. I received some nice comments and autographs on my guestbook, some good press, some street cred., and even an extremely modest amount in sales -just enough to keep me from drowning in discouragement, yet not so much so there's plenty of room for growth :) I put this on here because I know people are curious. Everyone's so hopeful, and I don't blame them. Thus begins my slow rise to fame, although I'm in no rush. Once you're famous, I don't think you can ever really go back.

I'm currently laying low for a bit, hiding from the limelight. I'll be going back to school in September. Nothing's really changed as I've still got lots of painting, general art making, and tons of learning to work on daily. I'm going to try and share more of what I learn and discover on here.

I was recently informed my painting of "The Beach" will be on display at the Toronto Pearson International Airport from April 8, to October 30, 2011. It will be on exhibit in the Airspace Gallery, Terminal 1. It is 4 feet x 3 feet, and depicts elements from beaches all over.

Received a terrific book awhile back, the journal of Keith Haring.

I throughly enjoyed it, it documents life and art through the eyes of Keith Haring, it also includes some very interesting tidbits about the people who took to him. Lots of stuff has been written about him already, so I am not going to bore you by doing a less than perfect job here. Anyway, here are some of my favorite parts:

This is a blue moment... it's blue because I'm confused, again; or should I say "still"? I don't know what I want or how to get it. I act like I know what I want, and I appear to be going after it-fast, but I don't when it comes down to it, even know. I guess it's because I'm afraid. Afraid I'm wrong. And I guess I'm afraid I'm wrong, because I constantly relate myself to other people, other experiences, other ideas, I should be looking at both in perspective, not comparing. I relate my life to an idea or an example that is some entirely different life. I should be relating it to my life only in the sense that each has good and bad facets. Each is separate. The only way the other attained enough merit, making it worthy of my admiration or long to copy it is by taking chances, taking it in its own way. It has grown with different situations and has discovered different heights of happiness and equal sorrows. If I always seek to pattern my life after another, mine is being wasted re-doing things for my own empty acceptance. But, if I live my life my way and only let the other [artists] influence me as a reference, a starting point I can build an even highter awareness instead of staying dormant. If I can take this and apply it, it will help, but again I am afraid. Afraid I'll just igrnore this whole revelation and remain in the rut and rationalize and call it human nature or some shit. But, I've been living like this for so long that it seems I'm doomed to continue. Although I realize it now, so that is encouraging. If I can do this, then it should not be hard to answer my questions and doubts about my forthcoming adventure. If I am all that is in question, then I should be able to answer all. Like past experience, there is always a certain magic that some call "Fate." Lately it hasn't been as evident, or perhaps I am just more ignorant of it, but I know that I'll end up somewhere for some reason or no reason, but with some answers or at least be a little clearer on why I am and what I am aiming to do or what I am gonna do or just "do." If this fate is negative, that isn't negative because that is what happend and that then was the fate. I only wish that I could have more confidence and try to forget all my silly preconceptions, misconceptions, and just live. Just live. Just. Live. Just live till I die.

Ocober 13, 1987: TOKYO

I was greeted at the door of the plane by a woman who was there to escort me through customs and make sure I was O.K. I was impressed. Someone on the plane must have alerted her that I was arriving and they considered me important enough to escort. That's Japan for you... I asked her if she was also the one who got to greet Michael Jackson a few weeks ago and she said she was. Now I'm really impressed.

I was continually getting compared to Andy, but I don't know if it was for the right reasons. For me, it was an honor to be compared to him even though I feel we are very different and our contributions are different.
But I will always acknowledge my debt to him. The biggest honor was the support and endorsement he bestowed upon me. By mere association he showed his support. When we began to trade works we traded value for value, but quickly as we became friends we began to trade work for work (one for one instead of disproportionate amounts). I learned a lot of things from Andy in the five years we were friends. He prepared me for the "success" that happened to me while I knew him, and taught me the "responsiblity" of that success. He taught mostly by example, but would often offer ideas and suggestions, sometimes humorous and sometimes serious... Also, he was one of the only artists whose studio would inspire me to work more and work harder. Ironically, he was the one who convinced me to be more health-conscious and aware of my body. When I was at the Factory and he could do more push-ups than me, I knew it was time to start working out. He was always interested in everything I was doing and was totally plugged in to everything that was happening around him. He didn't however only, take; he gave as much as or more than he took...
He always added his support to a new idea or venture... He got jobs for me, he directed collectors to me and continually traded works...

March 28, 1987: On a plane from Dusseldorf to New York City

Spirits travel without limits. Andy is in me now. I knew before he died that he would never really die. He lives inside many people. He understood all of these things.
Most people never give him credit for this. He has an outward image of a manipulator, a "user" of people. In fact, the opposite is true-people used him and he let himself be used. He wanted to make things better for everyone else. He helped a lot of people to see themselves. He was not transparent, but maybe a mirror. Nobody can be responsible for other people's lives. Everyone ultmately charts their own course.

It's bin a puzzling year filled with excitement, disappointment, success, challenge and promise.
I completed my 100th painting this year. It took me three weeks and twenty six years. So that's 9,511 days x 24 hours(per day) @ $10(an hour)= $2,282,640. It depicts a minature version of my 1st 100 paintings except for one that's gone missing. It also includes one Jackson Pollock knock off that got thrown out.

Through going some old stuff, I found some titles pages I did when I was 9. I thought they were interesting as they document my very early process and development, like my first depiction of plaid. I had a few more, but I think my teacher kept them :(

I also joined a drawing club this year. See below for my Spooky Astronauts Drawing Club Performance Appraisal, 2010.

I also started writing a book. Despite the title, it actually has very little to do with me, but more about everyone else.

Timeraiser received 130 applications for only 27 spots and given the excellence of applications, the final selections were made with difficulty.

Despite the overall quality of your application, it was not selected to be included in the 2011 Toronto Timeraiser appreciates the time and effort you put into your submission and our decision in no way reflects your artistic merit. We strongly encourage you to submit your work again next year. If you would like further details on the selection process please do not hesitate to contact us as we are pleased to speak with you individually.

Your application was thoroughly reviewed and rated by our volunteer Art Jury. This Jury operates at arms-length from the staff at Timeraiser and its members are recruited for specific expertise regarding local, emerging and mid-career artists.

The Jury considered several factors in making the final selections. A key factor was ensuring fair representation of all mediums with preference given to local, emerging artists. As well, that the piece would appeal to the Timeraiser demographic of young professionals in their 20s and 30s. Finally, in some cases, the work had already been selected in previous years, and we wanted to give other artists an opportunity to participate.

A final note regarding future submissions, our Jury strongly recommends artists submit their work as a collection opposed to an assortment of various independent pieces. This helps the Jury assess each artist in a more affluent manner which is certainly beneficial in the selection process.

Once again, thank you for your interest in the 2011 Toronto Timeraiser. We wish you every success with your artistic career.

Accountability:
Arrived to meetings more or less on time, except for that one time when I messed up the co-ordinates and got lost in space.

Continuing Competence:
Did astronaut work daily in at least some small form or other.

Ethics:
Refrained from stealing space bux from astronaut fund to get flyers and posters printed and astronaut ice cream instead.

Professional Knowledge:
Learned how to use a new coloring tool in Photoshop, the Gradient Tool. Select an area using the wand tool (W), select the gradient tool (G), select a point, hold it down and drag, let go.

Knowledge Application:
Used the gradient tool to color in backgrounds, animals, plants, weaponry, limbs, cigarettes and instruments a bunch of times.

Leadership:
Recruited over ten astronauts in the Toronto area.

Relationships:
Spoke on behalf of the club to inquiring art dealers, journalists, gallery owners, and fans.

Professional Relationships:
Thanked all astronauts for their hard work and kept my door open to answer any astronaut comments, questions, and concerns.

Strengths, Limitations, And How To Fix: Astronaut recruitment is at an all time high, but astronaut coloring is at an all time low. I could probably fix this by getting things inked sooner so more astronauts could have the option of coloring.

Anyway, I'm glad to say that I received my BIG PROMOTION over the weekend for all my hard work, and have now been promoted to a ROGUE LEADER: HEAD SPOOKY ASTRONAUT OF THE TORONTO CHAPTER. Just got home from my first art tour. It went O. K., well I learned a lot. I kept expecting something terrible to happen, but nothing did, which was a very pleasant surprise (until I opened my suggestion box to discover some very unwelcoming comments). Well thanks to Mike and everyone who helped me to make my stay possible in Port Stanley, Ontario, and thanks to all who came bI to say some encouraging things. Top favorite things (in no particular order) include the people, the fish, the bridge that goes up and down coincidently located on Bridge St., the beach, the ice cream, the master sWEET I stayed in, the company, the house with the sandbox in front of it, and the black forest donut from Spicer's Bakery.

What isn’t more exciting than a new gallery to spice up the neighbourhood? Well, thanks to twenty-three year old Josh Glover, businessman and skateboarder, the neighbourhood has a spanking new gallery. It’s the place for anyone interested in discovering exciting new works of art by a new breed of talented, emerging artists.
Glover has opened his gallery at 789 Dundas Street West just west of Bathurst Street following an extensive search. For Glover, the journey of his creative brainchild began in late 2007 when he used his two bedroom apartment in Leslieville to stage his first show for several artists.
“A goal of the gallery is to give emerging artists the same opportunity as established artists to have their work seen,” said Glover. One of the artists Glover represents is Wes Loates, a graduate of the Digital Media Diploma Program from Durham Business Computer College . Loates grew up in an artistic family. His father, Bernard Loates, is a printer publisher, and his uncle, Glen Loates, is a wildlife artist. Loates striking works, created with acrylic on panel, are inspired by his surroundings, people, the city and day to day life. Loates is proud to be a part of Sleeping Giant Gallery and is appreciative of the opportunities Glover is providing to emerging artists. “It’s a great gallery to be a part of and it feels like home,” Loates said.
Lisa Ng, a contemporary artist, echoes Wes Loates's sentiments. She too is very appreciative of the exposure, of having her work seen, and being a part of the community of artists at Sleeping Giant Gallery. A recent graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design, her colourful, striking, quirky, and socially relevant and thought provoking works, created with acrylic and ink on canvas, are inspired by her environment, the times she lives in, the people around her, and h er day-to-day conversations. "Each painting has its own inspiration, and my inspiration comes from life," Ng said. Her painting TV Junk Yard was inspired by a TV set that had been tossed out and left on the curb. A note was attached saying that the TV was working perfectly fine. Her painting The Red Painting was inspired by things that are red, her favourite colour. In her piece, amongst other things, she painted a red light district, and referenced two artists, Rene Magritte and Matisse, who both worked with the colour red.
Named after the Wall Street term used by stock brokers in the know to describe a stock about to take off, Sleeping Giant Gallery references the potential power of its artists to take off in the art world. The gallery is providing opportunities for the public to invest in art at a good price point.
Glover has converted a neglected store front which was formerly occupied in the second last provincial election several years ago into an attractive gallery. He exposed the ceiling, re-did the walls, and laid down a new floor made up of 10 foot planks of pine. Glover has also created an artist studio in=2 0the back of the gallery and two more in the basement. He’s immensely proud of his accomplishment. “I like it because I got to do everything the way I wanted it to look,” he said.
The gallery officially opened with a party on January 31st, 2009 . The first exhibition titled A Black & White Affair opened on February 6th featuring new works by 13 artists. The artists were only allowed to work in black and white and given an assigned colour to incorporate in their works. The idea behind the show was to take the artists out of their realm and test their ability and skills to see what they could create. The second show titled Group of Seleven features the works of eleven emerging Canadian artists. Glover named the show the Group of Seleven to reference the Group of Seven. It’s a pun on the name. “It’s funny. You can’t take offence to that,” said Glover. He feels they are doing work on the same level and should be acknowledged, he said.
Glover likes the neigbhourhood, that it hasn’t become gentrified and still has a lot of independent businesses. Although Glover o pened his gallery in challenging economic times and didn’t anticipate the economic downturn which occurred in the last six months, his positive attitude, chutzpah, and passion should see him through. The next exhibit will feature works by Nick Birnie, a Toronto-based photographer and world traveler. The show opens on Saturday March 21st and runs to Friday, April 3rd.

As I mentioned earliar, I am planning a $1 painting sale.

The idea came to me about a year ago: An 8 x 10 inch
painting depicting things you can buy for roughly a dollar.
I played around with the idea for a few months, production
began last October? I thought it was done in December, but
then a month later, I thought of more stuff to add to it,
and have been adding since. Recent additions include a
sprinkled donut, a condom, a Tim Horton's coffee, an
honorary hot dog, a piece of candy, and some dental floss
that spell out hello. Hear are the most recent pictures of it:

Painting goes on sale at precisely 1pm on Sunday, June 6th,
2010, in Jimmie Simpson Park, which COINCIDENTLY also
happens to be during the Riverdale Artwalk where I will also
be exhibiting other new work. I am booth 55. First come first

receive a free print of the $1 painting. Sale is for the

In Memory Of Mr. Doug Moore

Every so often people inquire about where I get my
influences from. The truth is that among many other things, I
am quite certain this man had a lot to do with it. My
art/philosophy teacher through grades 6, 11, 12, and OAC.
Probably the one art teacher I spent the most time with. And
every so often someone will come along and tell me how famous
they think I'm going to be, he was maybe the very first person
who would think so. He showed me nothing can stop you from
being amazing. He passed away not too long ago, so I guess
you could say this is a eulogy blog post. On the top is one of his
pictures, and under that is a picture of him. Top favorite lesson I
learned was him throwing out one of my paintings because I really
had done it last minute, the paint hadn't even dried yet - not
worth doing if your heart's not in it.

LISA NG GOES BACK TO WORK

Since deciding to go on a creativity sharing strike January, 16, 2010, exactly three months ago, some moderate negoiation with the universe has taken place. A vote as to decide if the strike would continue was held today, March 16, 2010.
Results concluded that 62% of Lisa voted con strike with the remaining 38% voted pro strike. 72% of voters in favor of the strike came from Lisa's upper extremities.

Since deciding to strike, eye have turned down
three shows. Negotiaons with the universe have
begun. It has bin generating at least sum mild
attention: In the past 2.5 weeks eye have been
approached to submit pictures two a website that
aren't up yet, May B bee in a 3-6 minute film,
meat to further discuss a project for mass
production that hasn't happened yet, and I did one
interview, got called to do another one, then got
turned down by the same won, and have 2
prospects for doing 1 more.

It has also recently occurred to me that I might
need to make more specific goals. For instance, one
example might be health benefits, specifically for
eyewear. For how can I paint my pictures with my
i sight so blurry. Maybe I should consult my health
care provider, ore LensCrafters.

The strike also seems to be generating some
more very popular and interesting questions. I
shall answer them now:

Why the strike?
You can't get what you want unless you ask for it.

How much longer do you project the strike to last?
Undecided, but I have an inkling there will be
another vote in at least by two months.

How many people are voting?
Just me.

Are you still painting?
Of course.

Nothing out of the ordinary that I can recall.
Yet, generally all day every day because it's never going to

ANNOUNCING CREATIVITY SHARING STRIKE

Despite 7 years of dedication and modest success
in my last string of shows, I will like to announce
that I will be holding a creativity sharing strike. Do
to lack of funds, cost of rental space, cost of
transportation, lack of health benefits, comments
made on my blog that are trying to sell people Uggs
boots, the recession, etc. etc., I will be withdrawing
my art from the public arena for awhile. The strike,
however, will not affect production, but until
negotiations with the universe are sorted out, I
remain privately hoarding.

FAQ

How long is the strike projected to go on for?

It is uncertain at this point.

Will this affect the sale of the $1 painting?

Perhaps, should the strike end sometime after
June, I will re-schedule the sale.

Will the price of the painting go up due to
interest and inflation?

No.

I am feeling down and can't find anything good to
look at, what am I suppose to do now?

You can do a number of things:

1. Go look for another picture source.
2. Consult your local library.
3. Make your own.

Ay finally finished my $1 Painting. I came up with the
idea over half a year ago, but never got around 2 it, beeee
cause let's face it, it wasn't gonna pay me much. Then just
recently eye was thinking about how if I were to die
tommorrow, what was the won thing I would have
regretted not getting around to making:

An 8 x 10 inch painting jam packed with $1 items
(although most of these items are probably no longer $1).
Covered in layers of intrinsic value, it will be available four
for $1. Sale begins, I'm thinking sometime in June, probably
in a park somewhere, I'm hoping for a Sunday, at precisely
1pm. Sail is not open to friends ore family.

Q & A ON THOUGHTS OF THE PROGRESSION OF WEIRD ART

What is the type of art that's like weird sculptures and stuff?

Hm, you are probably thinking more modern art. I'd say it all bee gan during the 1930s and onwards. Dadaism (Destroying old ideas of traditional art)---> Surrealism (Exploration of dreams and the unreal)---> Conceptualism (Exploration of the idea and not the artwork itself)

That's considered modern?

So basically I would say new art is always the weirdest until it gets old and worn out. Well Oh K eye guess maybe you define modern as knew. So maybe modern means 1990s onwards.Butt if you ask me, true weirdness began in the 1930s roughly, when things were especially made differently because it was clear they needed something new. When things broke away from the stuff they already had seen before. Like away from paintings that are made to look like the things that were painted like the Renaissance paintings, the Da Vinci, the Mona Lisa. Although won could also argue that weird art began with the impressionists which is 1800s??? Not sure.................because they thought impressionism was weird when that first came out... and it's replaced buy something even newer and weirder. Art is always evolving, and the newer should be the weirder, I would say, because it should always be challenging how people think.

Ok so art in general is always going to be weird.

If it's to push the boundaries: YES.
Butt there is always art that stays within parameters too.
But this art can become boring because it is no longer applicable to the time.

Does art ever repeat history, like fashion does?

Hm. Good question, from what i know, it hasn't yet.

It usually takes some aspect of some older art and changes it somehow to evolve. I guess you could say it is always influenced from what came before, but does not repeat.

Yeah I guess fashion's the same way, they take older styles and make it more suited for the new generation. How do people think of new names to call the art everytime something new comes out?

That's another very good question. I would say more often than not the art critic does, and on the very odd occasion the artist.. But even so the art critic usually makes the decision to either use the words of the artist, or disregard the words of the artist. Butt it is usually the people who write about the art who become the choosers of the words on how to describe that art. I guess you could say they are art journalists to be less negative.

Alrighty, I'm going to bed. Just needed a little refresher on the weirdness of art.

That was fun. Thanks for asking. I wish I could teach a class just on those very questions. I have 2 much too say.

The other day eye found out eye 1 this ribbon from the
Academy Of Realist Art as part of the Junction Arts
Festival. It is printed inn full color, on a heavy
cardstock, hand cut, n meticulously put together.
I love handmade awards. It's nice to feel appreciated.

Eye will take this oppourtunity to say a few words:

Being an artist is both a blessing and a curse in that
you can't help but put yourself through some sort
of struggle to achieve something that gives you,
and often those around you, joy. Happiness can also
be such a rare and special thing that when you find it,
you might as well rearrange the rest of your life
a round it, bask in it.

A shout out goes to:

"You could be 18, 30 or 50, you are young to
have decided to be an artist at this time in your life.
First let me congratulate you on your choice. From
here on, you enter the endless magic life of being an
artist.

The world is your oyster: It will provide you with
unlimited material for your art. Look at it again from
that point of view. Suddenly the world is a different
place, so interesting, so beautiful, and so mysterious.
Have fun with it. And share your fun with us.

You, as an artist, will unfold the infinite mystery of
life and share it with the world. It may just be two
people your work will communicate to. Don't be upset.
Be upset if you are not happy with your work. Never
be upset about how many people have seen it, or how
many reviews it has received. Your work will exist and
keep influencing the world. Moreover, your work will
keep changing the very configuration of our world no
matter what kind of attention it gets or doesn't get. So
even when you are an unknown artist, be caring of what
you make and what you give out. Your work, no matter
what, affects the world, and in return, it brings back 10
times what you've given out. If you give out junk, you
get back junk. If you give out confusion, you will give
yourself confusion. If you give out something beautiful,
you will get back 10 times more beauty in your life. That's
how it works. You are now like a tree in the park. Your
existence is making the city breathe well. So relax and be
yourself. Don't try to be anything but yourself. Rely on
your instinct and inspiration. Go with it!

By the way, my thanks to you for being an artist. I
am aware that I will be one of the many, many people
who gets the benefit of your decision. I wish you great
success.

Rolly’s garage is a mechanic’s old automobile
garage that has been transformed into an event
space. The show will reflect on themes of
construction, deconstruction, found objects, and
old beaten up junk. Think of a radical garage
sale. It is a comment on pollution, over
consumption, and finding beauty in the
grotesque, junk of life.
